Let's first talk about the most crucial part: the common types of explosion-proof electric motors, and the differences in the "life-saving logic" of different types are quite significant.

The first type, and the most widely used, is the "hard-core player" - explosion proof fan motors with the Ex d symbol. You can think of it as a "blast-proof fortress". The components that may generate sparks or high temperatures inside the motor are all sealed within an extremely sturdy casing. Even if an explosion occurs inside, this casing can withstand the pressure of the explosion without being damaged. What's more ingenious is that the connection points of the casing are not completely sealed but have precise small gaps. These gaps act as "cooling channels", reducing the flames generated by the explosion to a level that is insufficient to ignite the external gases. This type of motor is particularly robust and is suitable for high-risk Zone 1 and Zone 2 environments (which will be explained later regarding the classification of zones), being the "main force" in the industrial field.

The second type, the "relaxed protection player" - explosion-proof motor with the Ex e symbol. Its approach is completely different from the explosion-proof type. It does not implement "hard isolation", but rather "upgrades protection" based on the ordinary motor. For example, it raises the insulation level of the motor, increases the distance between wires, limits the temperature of the windings, and ensures that the motor does not generate sparks or dangerous high temperatures during normal operation or even slight overload. This motor has a lightweight structure and low cost, but its protection capability is relatively weaker. It can only be used in environments with lower risks, Zone 2, and requires higher maintenance and operation conditions. It needs to be well maintained regularly.

The third type, the "air curtain protection player" - positive pressure explosion proof fan motors, with the Ex p symbol. Its survival logic is "active defense": continuously introducing clean air or inert gas into the motor casing to keep the internal pressure consistently higher than the external pressure, forming an "air curtain" that keeps external flammable and explosive gases out. However, this type of motor is relatively "precious", requiring a dedicated air source and pressure monitoring system. It has a complex structure and high cost, and is generally only used in large or specially structured motors, such as certain scenarios where explosion-proof type or enhanced safety type cannot be used.

The fourth type, the "reduced protection player" - spark-free explosion-proof motor, with the Ex n symbol. It is a "simplified version" of the enhanced safety type, mainly ensuring that the motor does not generate ignition sparks or dangerous high temperatures during normal operation. The protection measures are fewer than those of the enhanced safety type. Therefore, its application range is narrower and it can only be used in environments with lower risks, Zone 2, and is usually used as an auxiliary device.

There is also a "specialized player" specifically for dust - dust-proof explosion proof fan motors, with the Ex tD symbol in the marking. In places like grain processing, wood factories, and flour mills, the danger does not come from gases but from flying dust. The casing of this motor can prevent a large amount of dust from entering, and even if a small amount of dust enters, it will not accumulate and cause danger. At the same time, the surface temperature of the motor will be controlled below the ignition temperature of the dust, preventing the "ignition" of the dust cloud.

After understanding the types of motors, the next crucial "security code" is - explosion-proof rating. The string of characters like "Ex db IIC T4 Gb" marked on the motor is the complete explosion-proof rating. Each segment has a specific meaning. Once you understand it, you can know in which environment this motor can operate. Let's break it down step by step.

First, the "Ex" at the beginning is the internationally recognized "explosion-proof symbol", indicating that this motor is an explosion-proof electrical device. The letters following it are the explosion-proof types we mentioned earlier, such as "d" for explosion-proof type and "e" for enhanced safety type.

Then there is the "gas group", such as I, IIA, IIB, IIC. This is based on the danger level of flammable and explosive gases: Class I is specifically for coal mine gas environments; Class II is for other gas environments, with IIA being the safest (such as propane), IIB being moderate (such as ethylene), and IIC being the most dangerous (such as hydrogen, acetylene). Here is a small rule: Motors that can be used in IIC type environments can also be used in IIB and IIA types; conversely, this is not the case.
