Choosing a flameproof motor isn't about picking the most expensive option. It's about matching the right motor to your actual hazardous area. Get this wrong, and you either overspend or create a safety gap.
Start with your zone, area, and grade classification. Zone tells you how likely an explosive atmosphere is. Area tells you what ignitable substance is present - gas, dust, or fiber. Grade tells you the maximum surface temperature from T1 to T6. Without your HAZOP report or ATEX zoning drawing, every other decision is guesswork.
For fixed-speed applications like pumps, fans, and compressors, squirrel cage is almost always the right call. Wound rotor motors have brushes and slip rings - more parts, more wear, more potential ignition points inside a motor meant to contain explosions. Squirrel cage motors have none of that. They run on high-quality ball bearings, deliver lower noise and vibration, and need far less maintenance. Simplicity in a hazardous area isn't a compromise. It's a safety feature.
Then filter by four hard specs. First, enclosure material - it should be high-grade cast iron for the full housing, not aluminum. Second, power density and IE efficiency class - IE3 is your minimum, IE4 saves real money over time. Third, bearing quality - if a supplier can't tell you what bearings they use, walk away. Fourth, the total cost of ownership. Flameproof motor maintenance means shutdown and re-certification. A cheaper motor that needs servicing every six months will cost you more than a pricier one that runs maintenance-free for years.
Certifications are non-negotiable. ATEX for Europe, IECEx for global export, CCC for China, UL/CSA for North America. No stamp, no installation.
